When operating under the Oil Well Service Permit (OWSP), tracking your off-duty time correctly is essential for staying compliant with Canadian Hours of Service (HOS) regulations. The Cycle Recap screen gives you a clear, at-a-glance view of your off-duty periods and resets — so you always know where you stand.
This guide covers how to read the Cycle Recap from both the driver and fleet administrator perspectives.
Cycle Recap -OWSP Drivers Guide
Accessing the Cycle Recap
From the main HOS screen, tap the screen slider (blue chevron).
Tap Cycle Recap.
The Cycle Recap displays your off-duty activity while driving under the OWSP. There are two key indicators to understand: "24" and "R".
"24" — 24-Hour Off-Duty Period
When you see "24" next to a date on your Cycle Recap screen, it means you completed a full 24 consecutive hours off-duty on that day.
Example from the app:
Mar 13 → 24
Mar 19 → 24
Mar 22 → 24
Each "24" counts toward your required 3 qualifying off-duty periods within any 24-day period, as required under:
SOR 2005-313, Section 63(2)(a) — Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations: At least 3 periods of off-duty time, each at least 24 hours long, in any period of 24 days, the periods being taken consecutively or separated by on-duty time.
If you can see 3 or more "24" entries within your 24-day window, you're on track.
“R” = 72-Hour Reset
When you see "R" on your Cycle Recap screen, it means you've completed a 72 consecutive hours of off-duty time after finishing driving under the OWSP. This clears you to transition back to standard HOS rules.
Example from the app:
"R" appears between Mar 24 and Mar 25, indicating the reset was completed around Mar 23.
This is required under:
SOR 2005-313, Section 63(2)(b) — Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations: At least 72 consecutive hours of off-duty time after ending driving under the provisions of the permit and beginning driving under those sections.
Once the "R" appears, you are cleared to return to normal HOS rules.
Protecting Your Off-Duty Time
1) What Makes a Break Valid?
For a 24-hour or 72-hour period to count, it must meet both of the following conditions:
Completely uninterrupted — any break in status resets the clock
Logged as Off-Duty or Sleeper Berth — no other duty status qualifies
2) What Can Interrupt Your Reset?
Even small actions can void a break and force the timer to restart:
Going On-Duty for even a few minutes
Any driving, however brief
Selecting an incorrect duty status
If any of these occur, the timer resets to zero and must be restarted.
Quick Example
Here's how a compliant OWSP cycle might look in practice:
Days | Activity | Recap Shows |
Days 1–5 | Working under OWSP | — |
Day 6 | 24 hours off-duty | 24 |
Days 7–11 | Working under OWSP | — |
Day 12 | 24 hours off-duty | 24 |
Days 13–17 | Working under OWSP | — |
Day 18 | 24 hours off-duty | 24 |
Day 19+ | Stop OWSP driving, take 72 hours off | R |
After the "R" appears, you are fully cleared to return to standard HOS rules.

Accessing a Driver's Cycle Recap
To view a driver's Cycle Recap in the Titan Web Portal:
Open the driver's Daily Log.
Click Recap in the top right corner.
This screen displays the individual driver's off-duty and reset activity under Hours of Service.
Understanding the "24" Indicator
Each "24" on the driver's recap represents a valid 24-hour consecutive off-duty period.
Example — Driver Recap:
Date | Status |
March 13 | ✅ Valid 24-hour off-duty period |
March 19 | ✅ Valid 24-hour off-duty period |
March 22 | ✅ Valid 24-hour off-duty period |
Total | 3 of 3 required within 24 days |
Regulatory basis: SOR 2005-313, Section 63(2)(a)
(a) at least 3 periods of off-duty time, each at least 24 hours long, in any period of 24 days, the periods being taken consecutively or separated by on-duty time;
Understanding the "R" Indicator
An "R" on the recap confirms the driver has completed a 72-hour consecutive off-duty reset and is cleared to exit OWSP rules.
Example:
March 23 → R (72-hour consecutive off-duty reset completed)
What this confirms:
✅ Driver is eligible to exit Oil Well Service Permit rules
✅ Driver can return to the standard HOS cycle
Regulatory basis: SOR 2005-313, Section 63(2)(b)
(b) at least 72 consecutive hours of off-duty time after ending driving under the provisions of the permit and beginning driving under those sections.
Tips for Fleet Admins
When drivers are operating under the Oil Well Service Permit (OWSP), Canadian Hours of Service regulations require drivers to complete at least 24 consecutive hours off‑duty within a rolling 24‑day period. Titan helps support compliance by automatically monitoring this requirement and notifying drivers when action is needed.
How Titan GPS Monitors the Requirement
Titan GPS continuously reviews driver log data to track qualifying 24‑hour off‑duty periods.
The system evaluates the previous 24 days of activity to determine whether the requirement has been met.
Driver Mobile Alerts
If a driver has not completed 24 consecutive hours off‑duty within the last 24 days, an alert displays on the driver’s mobile app.
The alert informs the driver that a 24‑hour off‑duty period is required to remain compliant.
Alerts appear automatically; no manual configuration is required.
What Fleet Administrators Should Know
Alerts are driver‑facing and cannot be manually dismissed by administrators.
The alert serves as an early warning, allowing drivers to schedule their required off‑duty time before a violation occurs.
Once a driver completes a qualifying 24‑hour off‑duty period, the alert will clear automatically after the logs update.
Reviewing Compliance
Fleet administrators can confirm compliance by reviewing:
The driver’s Cycle Recap, which shows off‑duty periods and resets
Log history to verify that the 24 consecutive hours off‑duty requirement has been met
Understanding these alerts helps administrators proactively manage compliance and support drivers operating under OWSP rules.
